The House is Small But The Welcome is Big™
The House is Small But the Welcome is Big is a project of Venice Arts that explores the impact of HIV/AIDS as experienced through the eyes of women and children living in South Africa and Mozambique. Venice Arts photographers are teaching kids, orphaned by AIDS, and teen activists, interested in media advocacy, how to tell their stories and document their lives and communities through photography. JCLF has supported this program since 2006.

The Joyful Heart Foundation
The Joyful Heart Foundation, founded by Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order: SVU, is the only nonprofit organization offering retreat programs for survivors of sexual assault and is a pioneer in this new and necessary work. The program has received positive feedback indicating lives are being changed and saved. The Joyful Heart Foundation’s Urban Retreats provide three-day programs for women that enable survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence to openly share trauma histories.

Kagunda Arahuka Women This group of 24 women received more than $14,000 to fund the purchase of equipment they will rent out for special events within their village and 250,000 tree seedlings. The women plan to raise the seedlings and sell the trees to the Forestry Department as part of the country’s reforestation project. The proceeds to each help them buy water collectors and goats.

• Little Angels Mwihoko Women’s Group  Also affectionately termed The Chicken Ladies of Thika, the group received nearly $10,000 from the JCL Fund to purchase equipment and chickens (layers & broilers) to raise. The women sell the eggs and the chickens in the local marketplace to support their families and an area orphanage.

• Nanyuki Spinners and Weavers
This Kenya group received more than $8,000 from the JCL Fund to purchase items to raise sheep for shearing and wool production. They create end-user products such as rugs, sweaters, tablecloths, and wall hangings for sale.
