2007 Projects

Kagunda Arahuka Women received more than $14,000 to fund the purchase of equipment (including a large tent, tables & chairs) to rent out for special events within their village and to purchase 250,000 seedlings the women will raise and ultimately sell to the Forestry Department as part of the country’s reforestation project.

• Little Angels Mwihoko Women’s Group  (also affectionately termed The Chicken Ladies of Thika) received nearly $10,000 to purchase equipment and chickens (layers & broilers) to raise and ultimately sell the eggs and the chickens in the local marketplace.

• Nanyuki Spinners and Weavers
received more than $8,000 to purchase items to raise sheep for shearing and wool production to create end-user products such as rugs, sweaters, tablecloths, and wall hangings for sale.

The Joyful Heart Foundation’s received a $25,000 grant and a $50,000 commitment over the next two years for the Urban Retreat program. Urban Retreats provides three-day programs for women that enable survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence to openly share trauma histories. The Joyful Heart Foundation, founded by Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order: SVU, is the only nonprofit organization offering retreat programs for survivors of sexual assault and is a pioneer in this new and necessary work. The program has received positive feedback indicating lives are being changed and saved.

Teacher on the Trail, 2007 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race received a $6,000 sponsorship. Kim Slade, a math coach and resource teacher at J. A. Thompson Elementary School in Vero Beach, FL, expanded the walls of classrooms throughout the world by creating lesson plans as she traveled along with the race in Alaska that included this educational journey of a lifetime.
